Classic Southern Pear Salad

By Trace Barnett

There’s something wonderfully nostalgic about a Southern pear salad. It’s one of those recipes that brings back memories of church potlucks, family reunions, and Sunday suppers—simple, beautiful, and surprisingly elegant in its own way. The origins trace back to the mid-20th century when canned fruit was a pantry staple and creative home cooks began dressing it up for company. Over time, this easy combination of sweet pears and creamy dressing earned a permanent place on the Southern table.

Today, pear salad has evolved from a refrigerator dish to a party-worthy presentation. Traditionally, it starts with pear halves—either fresh Bartletts in season or good-quality canned pears in juice. From there, the topping can go in a few delicious directions. Some prefer the classic spoonful of mayonnaise for its tangy richness, while others lighten it up with whipped cream cheese or even cottage cheese for a bit of texture and protein. Each version has its charm, and it’s worth trying them all to find your favorite.

To make it, arrange pear halves on a bed of crisp lettuce leaves. Add a small dollop of your chosen creamy topping to the center of each pear, then sprinkle with finely shredded sharp cheddar cheese. For a finishing touch, top each with a bright red maraschino cherry or a slice of fresh strawberry for a modern look.

Serve chilled as a starter or light side dish. It’s refreshingly simple, endlessly adaptable, and just as perfect for a garden luncheon as it was for Grandma’s Sunday table.
