Magic City Storytellers

Alabama Public Television is a proud sponsor of InSpero’s Magic City Storytellers in Birmingham. InSpero is a Birmingham-based organization dedicated to gathering people together in events of beauty, hospitality, art, music, stories, food and hope. Join us for one of their favorite gatherings of the year, where they showcase the voices and words of Birmingham-area artists. Two singer/songwriters. Two poets. Two writers. All at the Avon Theater. Featured this year will be the beloved Sean of the South – Sean Dietrich, young adult novelist Randi Pink, poet Halley Cotton, spoken word poet Kerry B, hip hip musicians Shaheed and DJ Supreme and singer/songwriter Drew Kearney. Come at 6pm to enjoy beer, wine and desserts. The performance begins at 7pm, and the evening includes a dessert intermission plus a preview of the upcoming Southern Storytellers series from PBS. Seating is limited to 250. Get your tickets early as this event sells out every year!

Screening – Sink the Alabama

Join us at GulfQuest National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico for a public screening of APT’s newest documentary: SINK THE ALABAMA. During the American Civil War, Raphael Semmes was captain of the cruiser CSS Alabama, the most successful commerce raider in maritime history. Semmes was later denounced by Abraham Lincoln as a “pirate,’ with a bounty on his head by the U.S. Navy Department. A combination of documentary and dramatization from multiple viewpoints, the story of the CSS Alabama – and Semmes himself – is a cautionary tale of bravado and rebellion. Producer Robert Clem will introduce the film – and will be available for a Q&A after the screening, along with featured historian and author John Sledge. The screening will be followed by a reception. This event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited.
