About Capitol Journal

CAPITOL JOURNAL is a public affairs program produced by Alabama Public Television that examines top news events and issues impacting the state. From their studio inside the Alabama State House, host Todd Stacy and the CAPITOL JOURNAL team cover the all aspects of Alabama politics and government, including in-depth interviews with the state’s top officials.

CAPITOL JOURNAL also features reporting on Alabama’s congressional delegation from their Capitol Hill bureau in Washington. The show airs Friday nights at 7:30 and Sundays at noon and, during the legislative session, Monday through Thursday nights at 10:30.

Todd Stacey, Host

Todd Stacy

Todd Stacy is the host of Capitol Journal and Director of News and Public Affairs for Alabama Public Television.

Todd previously spent 15 years working in Alabama politics, from the State House in Montgomery to Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. He left Washington in 2017 to pursue a career in journalism, with a heart for offering news consumers factual, honest reporting without political bias or corporate spin. Todd is a graduate of Auburn University and lives in Montgomery with his dog, Toby.

Jeff Sanders, Executive Producer / Correspondent

Jeff Sanders

Jeff Sanders brings more than 25 years of experience in broadcast journalism and public relations to his role with Capitol Journal at Alabama Public Television.

Born in Lakeland, Florida, but with deep family roots in Alabama, Jeff attended Troy University where he studied broadcast journalism and history. A lifelong history enthusiast, he enjoys sharing nuggets of knowledge and credits his inquisitive mind for sparking his career in journalism.

Jeff’s goal is to take the often-complicated world of politics at the State Capitol and make it understandable and relatable for viewers. He works to highlight not only the issues but also the people behind the policies, giving audiences a clearer perspective on Alabama’s leaders and decision-making.

Active in his community, Jeff has volunteered with the Salvation Army and raised funds for breast cancer research. Outside of work, he values time with his family, summers on Lake Martin, and hiking the scenic trails across Alabama.

Randy Scott, Executive Producer / Correspondent

Randy Scott is a native of Montgomery, Alabama. He earned a B.S. in Broadcast Journalism from Troy University.

Randy started his professional career working at Alabama Public Television in Montgomery as a Production Assistant and Editor.

Later, he landed at WPMI, working in their production department as a Master Control Operator. Soon afterwards, he moved across town to take a job with WALA as a Production Assistant. There he served as an Assistant Technical Director, Cameraman, Editor, Graphics Artist and Audio Operator.

He returned to WPMI, this time in their News Department as a General Assignment Reporter. He covered a wide range of stories, including local government, crime, education, athletics, politics, health, weather and entertainment. His career then took him to Birmingham’s WIAT as a Reporter and Field Producer.

Later, he returned to Alabama Public Television in Montgomery as a Reporter/Producer and Anchor. Stories have taken Randy from Washington DC to Atlanta to Philadelphia, covering news affecting Alabama citizens.

Alex Angle, Washington Correspondent

Alex Angle

Alex Angle is the Washington Correspondent for Alabama Public Television. Based on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., Alex covers the state’s congressional delegation and how their actions and votes impact Alabama.

A Texas native and graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism, Alex has reporting experience in television and print media, most recently at Roll Call’s Fact Base where she reported on the 2024 presidential campaign. Her direct reporting from Capitol Hill is featured each week on APT’s Capitol Journal.

Trisha Powell Crain, Senior Education Reporter

Trisha Powell Crain

Trisha Powell Crain is the senior education reporter for Alabama Public Television. She has more than 20 years of experience reporting on Alabama schools, covering a range of topics from what happens at state board meetings to how kids learn to what the latest round of data says about student outcomes.

Trish believes education is the foundation for a great state and aims to create meaningful dialogue to ensure every Alabamian gets a fair chance to reach his or her potential.

Prior to joining, she spent eight years as the senior education reporter for Alabama Education Lab at Alabama Media Group, known as AL.com. Her work has appeared in local, state, and national publications, online and in print.

Crain has three adult children and lives in Hoover in the house where she grew up. She graduated with a Master of Public Administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in May of 2013.
