Game Overview

Wrestling legend Rick Flair famously said, “If you want to be the man, you gotta beat the man.” That may not be completely applicable in flag football, but Moody did take on last year’s State Champion Wenonah Dragons three times this season and beat them twice. Every game, including in the state semi-finals, was a one score game. Moody finished the season with a 17-2 record. Montgomery Catholic posted a 19-5 record this season. They are making a return trip to the State Championship game this year, but last year, the Knights fell short against Wenonah.

Team Preview: Moody Blue Devils

The Blue Devils only other loss was to Oxford in the opening game of the season. Moody enjoys a unique coaching situation. They are co-coached by Rebecca Davis and Wren Moore. According to Coach Moore, the decision-making process is sometimes like “rock, paper, scissors.”

The Blue Devils like to air the ball out. They are led by quarterback Emma Kyle. Her favorite receivers are Serenity Rutledge, Sophie White and Zoey Perry. White is also Moody’s top running back.

Earlier in the season, the Blue Devils survived a scare when they snuck by Prattville 14-13.

“We have been underrated all year,” said Coach Moore. “Some of our girls have generational talent. This year has been about having fun ,and that approach has worked in their favor.”

Wendy Toole is in her third year of coaching the Lady Knights flag team. The Knights have enjoyed tremendous success under her leadership.

Team Preview: Montgomery Catholic Knights

Look for the ball to be in the air quite a bit during this game. Montgomery Catholic likes to throw the ball, too.

“We have a new quarterback this year, Sophomore Hayden Fitts. She gives us different looks, and we have improved every game,” Coach Toole said. Fitts favorite targets are Haley Ishman, Anna Russo and Lillie Abbot.

“We returned a lot on defense,” Toole said. “We like to stay in the quarterback’s face.” The Knights’ defense is led by two seniors, Jamie McQuire and Hayley Mason.

Final Thoughts

Montgomery Catholic watched the championship go to Wenonah in last year’s championship game, and they are hungry to bring a blue map back home to Mongomery. However, Moody took out the defending champions and are now playing for the crown. With both teams' strong passing game, the one that avoids throwing to the wrong team has a great chance of becoming this year's state champion.
