Caitlin Campbell | Young Hero Award from Alabama Public Television
EDUCATION

Caitlin Campbell

Hoover High School

Hoover, Alabama

Basketball, horseback riding, swimming—Hoover High School senior Caitlin Campbell is a star athlete in all three sports. The athletic accomplishments alone are impressive. They become even more so, when sports enthusiasts realize that she competes from a wheelchair. While still a baby, Caitlin was diagnosed with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), a neurological disorder characterized by progressive weakness and impaired sensory function in the legs and arms. She started rehab at Lakeshore Foundation at the tender of age of 3, but it wasn’t until age 9 that she was introduced to the world of wheelchair basketball. By 2008, team captain Caitlin Campbell was a nationally ranked varsity player in the sport.

Excellence in athletics is but one facet of this Young Hero. Caitlin maintains superior grades and is a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish National Honor Society, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and her church choir. She spends her time volunteering at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, encouraging children as they come out of surgery. Her extensive community service includes everything from counseling campers at the Lakeshore Foundation Spring Break Camp to leading 4-year-olds in Sunday School at Bluff Park United Methodist Church.
