Celebrate Fall with Weather Hunters!

Bring the magic of our new PBS KIDS show "Weather Hunters" into your fall routine.

By Rebecca Binford, B.S.

Ready to chase the weather and spark some wonder? Let’s make this fall unforgettable — one cloud, breeze, and question at a time. Bring the magic of our new PBS KIDS show, Weather Hunters, into your fall routine! Whether you’re observing cloud shapes on a morning walk or making leaf rubbings at the kitchen table, autumn offers countless chances to explore, ask “why?,” and learn together.

Watch Episode 6: The Leaf Painter

In this episode, the Hunter kids travel to a state park to explore why leaves change color. It blends fun storytelling with educational content, helping kids understand "senescence," or the process of leaves changing color with the season in a playful and engaging way.

Crafts All About Leaves

1. Fall Leaf Suncatcher

Capture the beauty of autumn with some handmade decor! This colorful leaf craft is perfect for decorating your home, the Thanksgiving table, or admiring the colors of fall in the classroom.

2. Make Art With Nature

This activity is all about exploration and expression. Your child or students will explore the world around them, get creative, and express their ideas using natural materials found in their backyard.

3. Kitchen Science With Fall Leaves

When you don't know something, you get to be a scientist! Simple science projects don't just show children cause and effect (like exploding baking soda and vinegar volcanoes), it teaches them to wonder "what will happen if..." and develop experiments to answer that question. This activity asks: What will happen if you put leaves from your yard in different liquids?

4. Create Leaf and Bark Art

Create beautiful, nature-inspired artworks with this sensory activity all about texture! Leaf and bark art is a great way to learn about the native and common trees of Alabama. It also encourages your child or students to look at the trees in their backyard and neighborhood in a whole new way!
