Public Media Wins at the 2025 Emmys!

Alabama Public Television takes home two Southeast Emmy Awards for its children's programming as public media funding is slashed in Washington.

By Hazel McLaughlin

Last Saturday, Alabama Public Television (APT) was one of many public media organizations to take home Emmy Awards at the 2025 Southeast Emmys, a regional award ceremony recognizing artistic and technical merit. APT's Digital and Education Media department won in the historical/cultural short form content category for "Yellowhammer History Hunt" and children/youth/teen long form content category for "DIY Science Time." To date, these APT educational programs have won six Emmy Awards overall.

The Future of Public Media

The awards show took place only two days after the U.S. House of Representatives voted to claw back $1.1 billion in approved public media funding, which will have a negative impact on APT's award-winning educational programming. The vote is now with the Senate until July 18. If this massive cut is approved, it would have a minimal impact on the federal debt but would immediately impact APT's award-winning shows. What can you do? Contact your senators today and urge them to oppose the rescission request.
