PREMIERING SUNDAY MARCH 2 AT 1:00 PM
Filmed at George Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch during the last two summers of mythologist Joseph Campbell’s life, the beloved 1988 series JOSEPH CAMPBELL AND THE POWER OF MYTH WITH BILL MOYERS explores what enduring myths can tell us about our lives.
Airing on Alabama Public Television starting on Sunday, March 2 at 1:00 PM and available to stream with Passport beginning March 1, the program features a series of timeless conversations between the iconic journalist and author about the classic hero cycle, creation myths, the mythology of love, the need for God, rites of passage in primitive societies, and the role of sacrifice in myth.
In each of the six episodes – “The Hero’s Adventure,” “The Message of the Myth,” “The First Storytellers,” “Sacrifice and Bliss,” “Love and the Goddess,” and “Masks of Eternity” – Moyers and Campbell focus on a character or theme found in cultural and religious mythologies. Campbell argues that these timeless archetypes continue to have a powerful influence on the choices we make and the ways we live.
