Kayden Bland
Billingsley School
Billingsley, Alabama
Kayden Bland, a senior at Billingsley School in Billingsley, has faced extraordinary medical challenges with unwavering faith and determination. She was nominated by retired educator and family friend Ted Kicklighter, who has witnessed her resilience, leadership, and dedication to serving others firsthand. On May 21, 2024, just one month after her sixteenth birthday, Kayden suffered an unexpected seizure while home alone, sustaining serious injuries, including third-degree burns. She was later diagnosed with Juvenile Epilepsy and began a difficult journey marked by monthly seizures, medication side effects, hospitalizations, and ultimately surgery to implant a vagus nerve stimulation device when her condition was deemed medication resistant.
Despite physical setbacks and uncertainty, Kayden refused to let her diagnosis define her. She returned to competition in cross country and track, even after experiencing seizures following races. She qualified for the state championship meet in cross country and is now competing with Billingsley’s inaugural indoor track team, ranking among the top competitors in the 800-meter run and 4×200-meter relay. While managing the effects of her implanted device, which occasionally impacts her voice, Kayden also earned fourth place in the state in the FFA Prepared Public Speaking event. Through each setback, she has remained focused on faith, resilience, and intentional joy.
Kayden channels that perseverance into service. A dedicated member of Indian Grave Baptist Church, she has participated in mission trips to Guatemala through the Autauga Baptist Association, helping lead Vacation Bible Schools and school assemblies for children in underserved communities. Locally, she played a significant role in Youth Leadership Autauga County, helping plan and execute a playground renovation project at the Prattville YMCA. She also participated in a group effort to raise more than $20,000 to support the construction of a Vietnam Memorial at the American Village in Montevallo, demonstrating her commitment to honoring veterans and serving her community.
Within her school, Kayden has been a steady leader. She has held multiple leadership positions in the National Future Farmers of America Organization, including President for three years and Vice President as a senior. She has also served as a Campus Leader for First Priority, Co-Captain of the varsity cheer squad, and Captain of the Cross-Country team. Her leadership is marked not only by visibility but by consistency and reliability.
Academically, Kayden maintains a 4.09 GPA and has earned Honor Roll recognition every term of her high school career. She was named Outstanding Student in Agriculture Education during her junior year. Even while navigating frequent medical appointments and recovery periods, she has remained committed to academic excellence.
Kayden Bland embodies courage, faith, and disciplined perseverance. She has transformed personal adversity into purposeful service and leadership, making her a truly deserving recipient of recognition as a Young Hero.
