Alabama Public Television was the nation’s first statewide public television network, going on the air in 1955—nearly 15 years before the creation of PBS. Since that time, APT has remained a pioneer in educational broadcasting and a trusted source of programming for generations of Alabamians. That legacy continues today. Even in the face of economic challenges, APT’s mission remains unchanged: to focus on Alabama-based content that reflects and celebrates the unique culture, communities, and character of our state—while also bringing the best of science, culture, and the arts from around the world to Alabama homes.
Our dedication to education remains at the forefront of what we do. In close coordination with the Alabama Department of Education, we will continue to provide trusted, high-quality educational resources and services for Alabama’s children, families, and educators—including pre-K training throughout the state.
We also recognize our critical role in public safety and civic awareness. APT will continue to provide emergency broadcast services for weather events, public safety alerts, and law enforcement notifications—ensuring that the citizens of Alabama stay informed and protected. In addition, our trusted Capitol Journal program will continue to provide in-depth, nonpartisan coverage of state and local government, keeping viewers informed about key issues and decisions from the Statehouse that directly impact their lives. Alabama Public Television’s editorial commitment has always been to fair, impartial, and substantiated factual reporting—and we remain firmly dedicated to that standard without bias toward any political affiliation or position.
We understand that difficult decisions will need to be made in the weeks and months ahead. However, we will remain focused on our core mission of public service and delivering programming that informs, educates, and inspires.
As one example of our ongoing commitment, beginning in August, APT will launch statewide coverage of High School Football each Thursday night—highlighting some of the best teams and athletes from across Alabama and leading up to the Championship games in December.
This is just one way we will continue to shine a spotlight on the best of Alabama and serve our viewers with the content they value and trust.
