2024 Fall Festival at Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts

WHEN:

Saturday, September 21 and Sunday, September 22

WHERE:

Montgomery, Alabama

The Fall Festival returns to the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts on Saturday, September 21, and Sunday, September 22 from 10 AM to 5 PM. Held in the scenic surroundings of the Museum’s Caddell Sculpture Garden and throughout the building, the event will host local artists, makers, musicians, brewers, and community members for a weekend of celebration and creativity.

Building on the success of its inaugural year, the Fall Festival is expanding beyond the Museum’s cherished Artist Market to include more artist-led demonstrations and community partnerships. With over 2,600 attendees in 2023, the MMFA showcased its ability to meet the community’s desire for a fine arts-based festival, and the Museum is eager to continue this momentum. “Last year our community supported Fall Festival in a big way by showing up to celebrate the creativity that thrives in Alabama,” says MMFA Head of Learning and Programs Emily Stuart Thomas. “This year, we have kept all the fun, creative elements from our last event such as artist demonstrations, music, and beer tastings, and added artmaking activities such as glass blowing, a Sensory Space, and more community partners. We can't wait for visitors to spend the day at the Museum and build new community connections with us at Fall Festival 2024.” The lineup for live demonstrations, activities, and vendors captures some of the best of the River Region’s diverse arts landscape. Visitors can expect to see many familiar favorites from Montgomery’s arts scene—such as painter George Taylor, mixed media artist Sarah Tanner, multimedia artist Shawanda C. (STAR Peaces), and ceramicist Sara Crocker
Dr. Christopher Greenman is a returning artist at this year’s market. “I taught ceramics and art at Alabama State University for twenty-seven years,” says Greenman. "I began my journey in pottery learning under Ken Beittel, author of Zen and the Art of Pottery. I find great inspiration from the pottery and sculptural ceramic forms that come from the East - Japan, China, and Korea. I also look at the Mengie tradition of ‘folk pottery,’ simple, unadorned forms made for use, made with a knowledge of trying to re-unify the user with the outside world of nature.” Fresh faces at this year’s market include De Lorenci Johnson of LiMari Studio (jewelry), David Gentry (visual artist and filmmaker), and Sujong Paek of Art Station, who will be displaying works made with acrylics and Hanji, a traditional Korean paper craft. Recognizing that the size and scope of the event may be overwhelming for some guests, Museum staff have designed the second day of Fall Festival, Sunday, September 22, to be a more sensory friendly experience—a quieter day geared towards sensory accessibility for all visitors.
If exploring over 30 artist vendors and live demonstrations sounds like fun then there’s even more to look forward to at the festival. Spend time in the Museum’s galleries, including the current temporary exhibition Art Connects, stroll through the permanent collection, and visit community partner booths in the sculpture garden. With a wide variety of media and traditions represented, and accessible price points, there is something for everyone at Fall Festival 2024.
Proceeds from the Artist Market benefit the local artist community and educational programming at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts.
