This week we're proud to present a THE TORCH, winner of the Best Alabama Film at this year's Sidewalk Film Festival. This powerful documentary from The Alabama Holocaust Education Center brings us personal narratives from Alabamians who survived the horrific circumstances of the Holocaust, recounting their perilous journey to freedom.

THE TORCH delves into the atrocities of the Holocaust and brings to light the personal narratives of Holocaust survivors who eventually made Alabama their home. Through their personal testimonies, viewers will witness the survivors’ incredible strength, resilience, and unwavering determination to build new lives despite the immense loss they suffered.

The documentary provides a deep and intimate look at the survivors’ experiences, beginning with the terrifying events of Kristallnacht and the devasting impacts on their families. Viewers will follow their perilous journeys, as they were uprooted from their homes, forced to flee with nothing but an unbreakable will to survive, and struggled to find refuge in unfamiliar lands. Hear the stories of how these survivors found their way to the United States and were reunited with family members, eventually settling in Alabama.

The Torch illustrates the survivors’ tireless efforts to “pass the torch” of Holocaust remembrance to future generations. By sharing their stories, they aim to ensure that, and lessons of the Holocaust are never forgotten, and that history’s darkest moments are remembered for generations to come.
