Three everyday Americans - including one from Birmingham, Alabama - learn about their family histories!


For the past ten years, Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and his team have been using genealogical detective work and cutting-edge DNA analysis to trace the family trees of well-known personalities on the popular PBS series FINDING YOUR ROOTS. Now, in a milestone episode “Viewers Like You,” Gates explores the pasts of three NON-celebrity guests including one from Alabama. “Viewers Like You,” premieres Tuesday, April 9, at 7 p.m., on Alabama Public Television.

After a nation-wide casting call last year resulted in more than 9,000 submissions, Henry Louis Gates, Jr. chose three everyday Americans to uncover secrets that have haunted their families for generations. Gates sits down with each of them, and with each turn of the page in their ‘book of life,” he reveals long-buried secrets and hidden identities, allowing each of his guests to understand themselves—and their families—as never before.

The guest from Birmingham wonders why a paternal great grandparent vanished, abandoning a child. Another guest hopes to unveil the biological identity of a great grandparent who was adopted, and the third guest seeks to identify the biological father of her grandmother.
