Alabama Craft

Explore the work of seven Alabama artisans working in pottery, textiles, wood, iron and glass.

THURSDAY NIGHT - 8:00PM & 9:00PM

Before work began on our popular JOURNEY PROUD series with Joey Brackner from the Alabama State Council on the Arts, we commissioned a special two-part documentary called ALABAMA CRAFT.  Due to the popularity that repeats of  JOURNEY PROUD continue to enjoy, we thought viewers might like another opportunity to see these earlier documentaries as well.

Produced in partnership with the Alabama State Council on the Arts (ASCA), ALABAMA CRAFT focuses on the work of potters Jerry Brown and Charles Smith, quilters Mozell Benson and Bettye Kimbrell, glassblower Cal Breed, musical instrument maker Gene Ivey, and blacksmith John Phillips.

The camera follows the artists, exploring the creative process from conception through creation. How does the indigenous social, cultural, historical and physical environment of Alabama infuse the art of these masters? “Their work draws on a sense of place and story,” comments producer Andrew Grace, “and their arts demonstrate the commonality of the shared Alabama experience.”

Both episodes of ALABAMA CRAFT are also available here and on the free PBS App.
