School Readiness Improves Science and Literacy Skills

Lisa German attended the Cat In the Hat Knows a Lot About That Family and Community Learning workshop at Carbon Hill Elementary School with her two grandchildren. They were introduced to science concepts, such as categorization, engineering, and the scientific inquiry process through the Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That television show and related activities. During this four-week workshop, German and her family not only learned about science but also gained a new appreciation for reading.

Through funding from the Ready to Learn grant, Alabama Public Television is working with Oakman Middle School and Carbon Hill Junior High School to improve science and literacy skills in families with young children living in underserved areas. Family and Community Learning workshops introduce science concepts to families with children between the ages of 3-8 by using PBS Kids shows, digital games, hands-on activities, and a read-aloud storybook.
