Surrounded by the Tennessee River, the Lake Guntersville Reservoir, and Taylor Mountain, Guntersville State Park gives its visitors plenty to see and do. The park’s six thousand acres possess a vast variety of wildlife, great bass fishing, thirty-three miles of nature trails, and overnight accomodations.

2. Cheaha State Park

Opened in 1933 by the National Park Service, Cheaha State Park is the oldest state park in Alabama. The park just happens to be the highest point in the state of Alabama (2407 feet above sea level), and derives its name from the Creek Indian word for “high place.” Surrounded by the Talledega National Forest below, visitors can go down and experience the wildlife below as they hike on the 135 miles of Pinhoti Trail. This trail, goes all the way up to Katahdin State Park in Maine.

3. Gulf State Park

Located along the Alabama Gulf Coast near Orange Beach and Gulf Shores, Gulf State Park features two miles of sugar white beaches, championship golf, camping, cottages, cabins, hiking trails and fishing.

4. Oak Mountain State Park

Oak Mountain State Park, the largest state park in Alabama, offers 51 miles of trails, mountain biking, golf, swimming, fishing, a variety of overnight accomodations and the Alabama Wildlife Center.

5. Wind Creek State Park

Wind Creek State Park, with Lake Martin’s shoreline along its edge, is the perfect destination for those who love the water. As the largest state-owned camp ground in the US, with over fifteen hundred acres, Wind Creek State Park contains one hundred and eighty-seven camp sites. While visiting Wind Creek, be on the lookout for Canadian geese and bald eagles.
