Video Overview
This production is an adaptation of four of Shakespeare's plays ("Henry VI, Parts A, B, and C" and "Richard III") and is set during England's civil war between the House of Lancaster under the banner of the red rose and the House of Yorke under the banner of the white rose. This overview includes a closer look at the design and production of theatre elements which include footage of the set, the props, the costumes, the lights, the sound, and the music of the production. >

Alabama Course of Study: Arts Education - Theatre, 1998 Grade Ninth – Twelth Grades

Standards: Arts Education-Theatre:History Student will: 1. Incorporate content from courses of study in Social Studies and Language Arts. Interpret Theatre history through dramatic literature. 2. Compare the influence in Theatre of different historical periods, social issues, historical figures, and cultural groups. 4. Recognize that some of the world's great writers have written for the stage. 7. Research settings, properties, costumes, and make-up that illustrate cultural environments and/or historical periods. Arts Education-Theatre:Criticism Student will: 13. Analyze how emotional state affects perception. 14. Evaluate the intent, structure, effectiveness, and worth of the work of the director. 16. Analyze technical elements used to convey the originator's intent. 19. Explore and understand interdisciplinary relationships among art forms and the way they relate to the study, process, and production of Theatre. 20. Recognize and understand that visuals, sounds, movements, and word are ways of presenting ideas/feelings manifested through all the arts. 22. Compare and contrast productions with life situations. Reflecting upon personal and universal meanings of productions 25. Understand the role of Theatre and related areas as an avocation and the way they serve as a means of renewal and recreation. 26. Analyze the relationship of Theatre design to mood, emotions, and social and cultural biases. Arts Education-Theatre:Production Student will: 30. Discuss the process of theatrical production. 31. Analyze the relationships among the theatrical elements: make-up, theatrical Theatre, performer-management, performer-audience. 32. Understand and practice Theatre as a synthesis of all the arts. 33. Demonstrate responsible behavior and social discipline through successfull collaboration in Theatre and related media. Arts Education-Theatre:Writing Student will: 35. Identify and describe the elements of short plays and scenes. 38. Illustrate how language is used to define characters. Arts Education-Theatre:Direction Student will: 41. Identify the role(s) of the director in the Theatre process. 43. Research, understand, and employ established staging conventions appropriate to style and genre. Arts Education-Theatre:Design and Technical Student will: 45. Identify the various components of technical Theatre. 46. Identify the technical parts of a theatre facility and their functions. 47. Identify and define the basic types of scenery construction. 48. Describe the construction process of basic types of scenery such as flats or platforms. 49. Differentiate between construction for life and for Theatre. 50. Identify audience perceptions to be considered in scenic design. 52. Apply the basics of technical drawing used in creating renderings and working drawings. 52. Create a scale model from working drawings. 54. Describe the basic process of scenic painting techniques. 55. Explain the production concept of using lighting-direction, color, and intensity to creat mood. 56. Explain the roles of costumes in theatrical productions. 57. Design costume sketches using figure drawings. 58. Apply basic principles of complementary and contrasting colors in costume drawings and actual costumes. 59. Construct and coordinate simple costumes and accessories from and assortment of materials and supplies. 60. Analyze and design visual representations. Arts Education-Theatre:Sound Student will: 61. Describe the function and use of sound equipment. 62. Describe how audience perception is considered in sound design. Arts Education-Theatre:Management/Presenting Student will: 79. Understand the range of Theatre careers and related areas as occupational opportunities. 80. Define qualifications and skills required to enter various Theatre and related occupational areas. Alabama Course of Study: Arts Education - Visual Arts Grade Ninth – Twelth Grades Standards: Arts Education-Visual Arts:Technique and Processes Student will: 5. Initiate, define, and solve visual arts problems independently using higher-order thinking skills such as analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. Arts Education - Visual Arts Design Elements and Principles Student will: 9. Demonstrate the ability to compare two or more perspectives of the use of design principles and art elements in artwork. Arts Education - Visual Arts History and Culture Student will: 12. Research the characteristics and purposes of a variety of interrelated historical and cultural works of art. 13. Describe the function and explore the meaning of specific art objects from a variety of cultures, times, and places. 14. Analyze the historical and cultural influences and aesthetics of selected works of art. 16. Analyze characteristics of works of art that are common to various cultural groups and historical periods. Arts Education - Visual Arts Evaluation Student will: 17. Determine ways works of art differ visually, spatially, and functionally and describe how these are related to history and culture. 18. Select subjects, symbols, and ideas from daily life as subject matter for art. 20. Describe origins of specific images and ideas and explain why they are important in the work being examined and in the artwork of others. Arts Education - Visual Arts Criticism Student will: 23. Research various techniques of communicating meaning, ideas, attitudes, views and intentions in work of art. Arts Education - Visual Arts Connections Student will: 24. Compare themes, issues, and modes of expression of visual arts with other creative disciplines. 25. compare characteristics of visual arts with ideas, issues, and themes in the humanities or science within a given historical period.
