Popular "Trio" Celebrates 45 Years
Saturday, Aug. 12 at 7:00pm
The popular Birmingham-based ensemble Three on a String celebrated their 45th anniversary with a lively concert at the Lyric Theatre in downtown Birmingham last year, and this month Alabama Public Television is sharing that performance with everyone in Alabama. The television concert premieres Saturday, Aug. 12 at 7:00pm and features the delightful mix of folk, jazz, bluegrass, gospel and country music with a generous helping of humor for which the group is so well known.
“These reunion concerts are such special events for us,” says Jerry Ryan, one of the founding members of Three on a String. In this concert, the current four members of the “trio” – Jerry, Bobby Horton, Brad Ryan and Andy Meginniss – take the stage with all of the singers and musicians who have been part of the group during the past four decades. Over the course of the concert, these performers – John Vess, Shelton Harden, Cline "Rowdy" Yates, Joe Estes, Mark Weldon, Gordon Burt, Terry Ryan, Donny Carpenter, Herb Trotman, Glen Tolbert, Stan Putnam, Jason Bailey and Kelli Johnson – share their great voices and musical talents on guitar, bass, banjo, fiddle, mandolin or whatever else comes to hand.
Three on a String has performed in just about every city and town in Alabama, in venues large and small, and they draw crowds of loyal fans everywhere they go. Horton is also well-known for his musical contributions to the films of Ken Burns.
“We think of these reunion concerts as musical homecomings,” Jerry Ryan says. “That’s why we’re so excited we can share this concert with everybody in the state on Alabama Public Television. We couldn’t fit all of our fans and friends in Alabama into just one place, even if they could make the trip, but they can all tune in and be a part of it.”
For those who can’t see the original airing, the Three on a String 45th Anniversary Concert will be broadcast a second time on Thursday, Aug. 17 at 7:00pm on APT.
A special companion DVD featuring interviews with Three on a String and guest musicians, performances of their original music, and additional comedy sketches is available for a gift of $84.00 to support your favorite programs on APT.
