APT Wins 2nd Straight Emmy for Electronic Field Trips
On June 6, the Southeast chapter of the National Academy for Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) named Alabama Public Television’s electronic field trip Experiencing Shakespeare: Up On Your Feet a winner of the 2014 Southeast Regional Emmy Awards. Experiencing Shakespeare won the Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in Interactive Television, programming which blends traditional TV viewing with the interactivity of a computer. This is the second year in a row that an APT electronic field trip has won the Emmy for Interactivity.
Experiencing Shakespeare: Up On Your Feet helped students develop an understanding of Shakespeare by saying his words out loud. Created in partnership with the Folger Shakespeare Library, this 60-minute program combined pre-taped elements with live interactive studio segments. More than 62,000 students interacted with actors, scholars and each other through the use of Google Moderator and by participating in live polls. Some lucky students who had submitted videos ahead of the webcast were able to see their segments included in the nationwide event and received feedback from a studio panel of experts. A student favorite was the ability to ‘direct’ a Shakespearean insult war.
In addition to the interactive video program, Experiencing Shakespeare: Up On Your Feet provided teachers with a number of classroom resources to use with students before and after the online event.
