Greece: In the Footsteps of Paul the Apostle

April 13 26, 2016

Toward the end of the year 52 C.E., Paul the Apostle arrived in the ancient city of Philippi to preach the new faith. Philippi was a bustling and prosperous Roman garrison town on an important trade route between Italy and Persia. Its population’s religions reflected the diversity of such a busy settlement. Residents worshipped Greek, Roman, Phrygian and Egyptian gods and there was a small Jewish population as well. It was here that Paul met Lydia, a local woman and merchant of purple cloth, who became the first European Christian. Paul’s time in Philippi is described in the Acts of the Apostles, and his ongoing relationship with the city’s residents and growing Christian population is revealed in his Epistles to the Philippians. Philippi is considered to be the most important archaeological site of eastern Macedonia. Explore the impressive site with a local guide and see where Paul baptized Lydia and where he was held prisoner by Roman authorities.

England's Treasures: Featuring Highclere Castle, the Lake District, Cotswolds and Cornwall

July 15 27, 2016

London, Highclere Castle, Choice of Walking Tour or Motorcoach Tour of London, Buckingham Palace, Coventry Cathedral, York, Yorkshire Dales, Lake District, Liverpool, Cotswolds, Blenheim Palace, Glastonbury Abbey, Cornwall, St. Ives, Salisbury, Stonehenge.

Experience It! Downton Abbey
In the county of Hampshire, England stands the magnificent Highclere Castle – otherwise known as Downton Abbey. The worldwide phenomenon (seen on Alabama Public Television ) is filmed here; the show uses the exterior and interior of the castle as the setting for the tragedies and triumphs of the Crawley family. In reality, the castle is home to the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon and the 1,000-acre site has been in their family's name since 1679. As you walk along the grounds in the same footsteps as Lord and Lady Grantham, and see with your own eyes the rooms in which Matthew and Lady Mary began their tumultuous love affair, you will truly feel as if you have stepped back through time (or perhaps through your television set).

Experience It! Glastonbury Abbey Primary
Return to the age of Camelot, when chivalry and heroic deeds carried the day. Once a powerful monastery, today Glastonbury Abbey attracts tourists and pilgrims alike. Dating to at least the 7th century, this was a site of importance to Britons, Saxons and Normans. Already a religious center, it rose to fame in 1191 when it was heralded across Britain that the graves of fabled King Arthur and Queen Guinevere had been found here. A massive covering stone, buried deep in the churchyard, held an inscription that purportedly read, "Here lies interred the famous King Arthur on the Isle of Avalon." Could this truly be Avalon, the mythic place where Excalibur was forged? Explore the legend for yourself amid the ruins of the great church and beautiful public park.
