Birmingham, Ala., June 15, 2017  -  For the past several years, Alabama Public Television’s live, interactive field trips have won national and regional awards for educational excellence and innovation. Another trophy was added to the collection this past weekend at the Southeast Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences ceremony in Atlanta. The Southeast Chapter represents television professionals from all disciplines of the industry from Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina and Asheville, NC.

Gulf Detectives at Dauphin Island Sea Lab: Animals of the Northern Gulf of Mexico won the Southeastern Emmy Award for Informational/Instructional Media.  This is the fourth Southeast Region Emmy Award APT has received for its live, interactive field trips that have now served more than 500,000 students in Alabama and more than 3 million in the United States. Gulf Detectives at Dauphin Island also received a Bronze Telly Award for educational media earlier this year.

APT’s live, interactive field trips take students beyond the walls of their classrooms to experience science, engineering, history, math, art and literature in the real world. The programs actively engage students with real-time polls and interactive Q&A segments with program guests through e-mail, Google, Twitter and Poll Everywhere. In the Gulf Detectives event, participants followed three student “detectives” on a research boat trip and a visit to Coffee Island to learn about oyster reef restoration efforts. Students observed a shark dissection and learned about animal habitats, animal adaptations, food webs, ecosystems and other aspects of biology and environmental science. Experts from Dauphin Island Sea Lab guided the students’ explorations.

In addition to the live events, archive videos of APT’s field trips are available online for students and classrooms to view anytime. All field trips come with preparation and background information for teachers, lesson plans, and other resources.
