  • Hispanic Heritage Month Holiday Video
    Grades K-4

    There are about 54 million Hispanics and Latinos in the United States. That's a lot of people to celebrate! Across the country, Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated with festivals and community events recognizing the contributions of Hispanics and Latinos in the United States.
  • Mariachi Youth Program
    Grades K-8

    Mariachi, a style that combines Spanish composition with traditional indigenous music, has been passed on orally for generations in the Latino community. Spark drops in on a program that trains youth in trumpet, violin, guitar, guitarrón, vihuela and vocals. The Mariachi Youth Program, sponsored by the Mexican Heritage Plaza in San Jose, has been available to children in public schools since 1992. 
  • What’s in a Name?
    Grades 4-8

    Structured as game questions, this activity challenges students to identify cities, states and geographical features whose names tell the story of the Indigenous, Spanish and Mexican settlement that pre-dated the U.S. The investigative questions can be used alone as a geography trivia game, as a matching activity, or in conjunction with analysis of historical maps.

    Grades 4-13+

    This collection of lesson plans, videos and classroom resources invites teachers and students to explore the history, people and issues chronicled in the PBS series, Latino Americans.

    Grades 5-8

    In this blended lesson supporting literacy skills, students learn about baseball legend Roberto Clemente, his early years in the United States during segregation, and changes in the 1960s that made the U.S. culture more open to Clemente’s Latino culture.

    Grades 6-13+

    This clip from Genealogy Roadshow gives a brief overview of Tejanos, or Texans of Mexican heritage, and their role in the formation of the state of Texas.
  • Native Americans and Spaniards
    Grades 9-13+

    John teaches you about early Spanish explorers, settlements, and what happened when they didn't get along with the indigenous people. The story of their rocky relations has been called the Black Legend.
